September 21, 1824 - March 30, 2025

On Sept. 21, 1824, after hearing letters from two medical professors, the Trustees rapidly organized creation of the new department. By-laws and regulations were adopted on Oct. 19, with lectures in the Medical Department beginning on the last Wednesday in March 1825.

As the first medical school in the nation’s capital and the 11th oldest in the country, GW has been at the forefront of medical education, training the next generation of compassionate health care professionals.
